关于这首儿歌的创作过程说法不一。但普遍认为是受到住在马萨诸塞州斯特林镇（Sterling, Massachusetts）的小女孩玛丽·伊丽莎白· 索伊（Mary Elizabeth Sawyer），也就后来的玛丽·泰勒夫人（Mary Tyler）的经历启发所写。
玛丽小的时侯，养了一只小羊羔当作宠物，小羊羔之前被它的妈妈抛弃了，是玛丽收养了它，细心照料它，结果小羊羔把她当成了妈妈，总是不停跟着她。
1820年的某一天，14岁的玛丽在他弟弟的怂恿下，她带着小羊羔去了学校，结果同学们看见小羊都兴奋不已，都想逗小羊玩，搞得教室混乱不堪。
