关于这首儿歌的创作过程说法不一。但普遍认为是受到住在马萨诸塞州斯特林镇(Sterling, Massachusetts)的小女孩玛丽·伊丽莎白· 索伊(Mary Elizabeth Sawyer),也就后来的玛丽·泰勒夫人(Mary Tyler)的经历启发所写。
玛丽小的时侯,养了一只小羊羔当作宠物,小羊羔之前被它的妈妈抛弃了,是玛丽收养了它,细心照料它,结果小羊羔把她当成了妈妈,总是不停跟着她。
1820年的某一天,14岁的玛丽在他弟弟的怂恿下,她带着小羊羔去了学校,结果同学们看见小羊都兴奋不已,都想逗小羊玩,搞得教室混乱不堪。
